SHIPPERS BEWARE Shippers should, however, be mindful that the carriers will respond to this collapse by increasingly making changes to their sailing schedules to reduce capacity. This comes in the form of blank sailings and port omissions as well as entire service cancellations. Some of the smaller new carriers who came into the market in the past 2 years have already announced their withdrawals. Additionally, some carriers have now begun to re-route vessels from North Europe to Asia to take the longer route south around Africa as this will both save costs for the Suez Canal transit as well as absorb vessel capacity owing to the longer transit time. The market should therefore be seen as inherently unstable in the coming months from both a commercial and an operational perspective.
