October 6, 2021 Long road to market normality The operational development in liner shipping has deteriorated significantly not only in the past few months but also in the past few weeks. This of course leads to the question everyone has been asking themselves for the past 18 months: When will this end? When will we return to normality? The honest answer is that no one in the world knows the answer to this question. However, it is possible to look at the current status and make an informed view on how the transition is likely to unfold and how long it will take as a very minimum. This in turn allows supply chain stakeholders to develop their own strategies for not just the remainder of 2021 but also for all of 2022. Why is an accurate prediction impossible? There are multiple answers to this. Four are particularly important: Covid, governments, consumers and practical clean-up. Covid is the driver of this whole debacle and we can hope we are on a path where the Coronavirus pandemic is repressed to a level we can all live with. But look back just 9 months when the first vaccines came out – the hope was that with workable vaccines we could quickly get Covid under control. But first Covid variants changed the equation and then widespread vaccine resistance further complicated the matter. Predicting exactly when we are done with this is not possible.
